NMHBA Law Camp Visits Metro Court

Two groups of aspiring attorneys from the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association Law Camp visited the Metropolitan Court in June and July for a tour of New Mexico’s busiest court and to compete in mock trial.

The middle school students from across the state observed DWI sentencing hearings, probation revocation hearings, misdemeanor custody arraignments and several traffic citation pleas.

The group also visited with Judge Maria I. Dominguez and Judge Renée Torres, who shared their journeys in becoming Metropolitan Court Judges and stressed the importance of education.  The students also got a first-hand look of the court’s inmate holding cells.

After preparing the entire week, the students returned to the courthouse to compete in a mock trial in front of their families and friends.  Metropolitan Court Judge Felicia Blea-Rivera and District Court Judge Lisa Chavez Ortega presided over the trials.
